Helm Simulator
The Helm Simulator is used to train ship vessel helm fundamentals to recruit personnel. Recruits are taught how to execute a number of helm commands using the helm simulator’s voice recognition capability to develop proper response, execute, and advise terminology in accordance with specific course objectives.
The training device simulates the typical steering characteristics of vessels that range in size from 47 feet up to 399 feet in length, and at speeds from 5 to 20 knots. Simulator reaction to course changes takes into account ship speed and size, speed of the rudder movement, and ship’s momentum. This simulator’s controls and indicators are patterned after the layout of the helm of a typical Coast Guard Cutter (CGC).
